Powdery scab situation
Powdery scab of potato, caused by Spongospora subterranea f. sp. subterranea
(Sss), and the potato mop-top virus (PMTV) it vectors, are causing
significant losses in Finnish potato production. PMTV has long been
recognized
as a cause of major quality problems, but the impacts of powdery
scab have increased in recent years, especially after wet growing seasons. With
global warming, both these diseases are likely to become more common.
Research
At Natural Resources Institute aspects of powdery scab epidemiology and management have been studied in recent years, including ongoing research that aims to elucidate the
roles of weeds and rotational crops as alternative hosts of Sss.
