Powdery scab situation
Powdery scab is scarce in France ; the disease however is not present in seed growing area and may be eventually observed only during cold and wet years in highlands (Alpes). It is an important problem in some neighbouring european countries and there is a heavy risk of import contaminated seed and besides of disease spread because of increased crop irrigation.
In this way, our investigations have been supported by professional organisation since 1999.
Research
Research has concentrated mainly on the detection of the pathogen in potato seeds and soils
using bioassay, immunology and PCR techniques. Then a survey of soil from potato-producing areas
will be carried out to gain more information about importance and geographical distribution of the
pathogen in France. Later, the evaluation of potato cultivars for resistance to powdery scab will be made.
