Powdery scab has been reported the first time in 1932. Later it was concluded that the pathogen must
occur in all regions where intensive potato production was common. In 1984 a severe outbreak was reported
in Sicily by Tuttobene (1986; see references) and in some places the canker stage was observed (see recent pictures of infected potatoes). Potatoes are cultivated in winter time where the climate is favourable for the disease.
Research
Today the disease causes severe problems in different areas of eastern Sicily (Catania, Siracusa).
New research initiative has been started. Research concentrates on detection of the pathogen
mainly in soil and its control (solarization).
