Powdery scab situation
Holland is a main seed producer and exporter. They have faced big problems with powdery scab in the fifties - that's why Kole started to work on Spongospora - excellent work by the way (Kole, 1954). Today it seems that the seed producers again are confronted with the disease. Little attention was given to it in the past and it is supposed that powdery scab symptoms were longtime mistaken for common scab. It may have become more of a problem since soil fumigation was banned.
But for long time officially there were no powdery scab problem in Holland (export reasons).
Research
As the powdery scab disease didn't exist officially, there
is no money available for research, also is no new research done so far. On the other hand: One of the most extensive work with Sss was done by a Dutch man: A.P. Kole 1954.
The breeding company HZPC Research B.V. has an extended program developing smart resistance/tolerance screening methods for germplasm to shorten the selection process.
At WUR Jack Vossen and Theo van der Lee have a collaboration project with Teagasc, Ireland - ScabEomics: Developing Effector-based breeding for resistance to
Spongospora subterranea (powdery scab) in potato by identifying new effectors and corresponding signatures,
and select secretome genes which could have resulted from previous Solanum/Sss interactions and are under diversified selection pressure. (see presentation by M. Leyva Perez, Teagasc at the 3rd Int. Spongospora Workshop, Oslo, 2024)
